JUSTICE FOR SALWA IS JUSTICE FOR ALL

A campaign to end violence against women across the Arab region

We are determined to build the Libya we have always dreamed of….
We may become disappointed or get let down but we will never give up for Libya – no matter how long the struggle takes.

Justice for Salwa is Justice for All is a campaign driven by the memory of Salwa Bugaighis, a revolutionary leader and human rights lawyer, and an extraordinary woman and a beloved friend of Karama, who was assassinated on election day in Libya in June 2014. Tragically, the plight of women who face such violence is not uncommon and like Salwa, millions of victims do not receive the justice they deserve. Launched on Human Rights Day in 2014, the Justice for Salwa campaign seeks the support of the international community to put pressure on regional governments to hold perpetrators of violence against women in the Arab region to account. With your support we will raise awareness of the ongoing struggle that millions of women across the Arab region face: the threat of rape, physical and sexual abuse, trafficking, “honour killings”, ongoing exclusion, FGM, slavery, and death- and will work to ensure that women are no longer silenced or sidelined.

The strength of the Justice for Salwa campaign depends on the support of women and men across the world. Be part of a call to end violence and exclusion against women in the Arab Region and help us build a platform for women’s voices to be heard.

ABOUT SALWA

Salwa was the embodiment of dignity, grace, and humanity. A key figure in the revolution against Gaddafi, and an activist throughout her life, Salwa fought fearlessly, persistently, and tenaciously not just for women’s rights, but the rights of her fellow Libyans to live free of oppression, persecution, marginalization, and torture. Her charisma, strength, and drive inspired others to follow in her fight to create real change, and her generosity and warmth, along with that of many brave women and mean leading the charge, built the trust that galvanized an entire movement in Libya.

On election day- the first general election in Libya in almost fifty years, held in June 2014- Salwa was assassinated in her own home by armed men who felt threatened by her messages of peace and democracy. Targeted because of her gender and her commitment to bring about progress, Salwa’s story and the lack of justice that followed her death brings into stark relief the upwards struggle facing women and human right’s activists in the Arab region.

Read about Salwa’s life, her ambitions, and the extraordinary woman who fought for democracy until the end.

Salwa had a dream, similar to the men and women of her people of Libya. She wanted the Libyans to enjoy freedom and peace and wanted to see a Libya where human rights are respected.” ~ Karama

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN: WHAT WE ARE STRIVING FOR

The 25th of June 2014 was a devastating day- not only for Salwa’s family, her two sons, her friends, and her colleagues, but for Libya. Following Salwa’s death, Salwa’s supporters campaigned for an independent investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. It was a call that fell on deaf ears. To this day, justice for Salwa has not been achieved. In the face of this injustice, the Justice for Salwa campaign was launched on Human Rights Day 2014 and continues Salwa’s fight for equality and democracy across the Arab region, where persecution, oppression and violence against women is all too common.

Change cannot happen without widespread support and a strong call to action. The Justice for Salwa campaign encourages women across the world to join a movement to share their stories and pressure regional governments into taking real action to secure justice through progress, reform of the justice system, and the end of violence against women.
