Leza Haidarah Mohammed Salem, a 35-year old Yemeni human rights and media activist from Aden, who participated in Karama’s strategic communication training in June 2012, was selected as part of the preparatory commission for the reconciliation dialogue.
The commission – which consists of 25 representatives from all Yemeni political forces – aims at settling disputes between rival forces in line with a United Nations-backed deal.

It will include the pro-separatism Southern Movement and northern Shi’ite rebels along with the anti-government youth group and non-government organizations.

From the 4-6th June, Karama and the Swedish Institute, Alexandria held a three-day training program in Cairo with some of the key leaders from civil society in Yemen.

The program’s objectives were to provide an opportunity for 25 women and youth leaders from all areas of Yemen a thorough and tailored understanding of communication as it relates to politics and civil society, and to generate suggestions for increasing political and social rights under the new Yemeni constitution.

Karama congratulates Leza on her success, and looks forward to continuing to support Yemeni women in their fight for equality and leadership roles at the forefront of the Yemeni transition.
